MULLAPPERIYAAR DAM
MULLAPPERIYAAR DAM
The
Mullaperiyar Dam is a masonry gravity dam on the Periyar River in the
Kerala state of India. It is located 881 m (2,890 ft) above
mean sea level, on the Cardamom Hills of the Western Ghats in
Thekkady, Idukki District of Kerala, South India. It was constructed
between 1887 and 1895 by the British Government to divert water
eastwards to the Madras Presidency area (present-day Tamil Nadu). It
has a height of 53.6 m (176 ft) from the foundation, and a
length of 365.7 m (1,200 ft). The Periyar National Park in
Thekkady is located around the dam's reservoir. The dam is located in
Kerala on the river Periyar, but is controlled and operated under a
period lease by neighboring Tamil Nadu state. Although the Periyar
river has a total catchment area of 5398 km2 with 114 km2
in Tamil Nadu, the catchment area of the Mullaperiyar dam itself lies
entirely in Kerala. The control and safety of the dam and the
validity and fairness of the lease agreement have been points of
dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu states. Supreme court judgment
came in 27 February 2006, allowing Tamil Nadu to raise the level of
the dam to 152 ft (46 m) after strengthening it. Responding
to it, Mullaperiyar dam was declared an 'endangered' scheduled dam by
the Kerala Government under the disputed Kerala Irrigation and Water
Conservation (Amendment) Act, 2006.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE
For decades, the Atlantic Ocean’s fabled Bermuda Triangle has captured the human imagination with unexplained disappearances of ships, planes, and people.
Some speculate that unknown and mysterious forces account for the unexplained disappearances, such as extraterrestrials capturing humans for study; the influence of the lost continent of Atlantis; vortices that suck objects into other dimensions; and other whimsical ideas. Some explanations are more grounded in science, if not in evidence. These include oceanic flatulence (methane gas erupting from ocean sediments) and disruptions in geomagnetic lines of flux.
Environmental considerations could explain many, if not most, of the disappearances. The majority of Atlantic tropical storms and hurricanes pass through the Bermuda Triangle, and in the days prior to improved weather forecasting, these dangerous storms claimed many ships. Also, the Gulf Stream can cause rapid, sometimes violent, changes in weather. Additionally, the large number of islands in the Caribbean Sea creates many areas of shallow water that can be treacherous to ship navigation. And there is some evidence to suggest that the Bermuda Triangle is a place where a “magnetic” compass sometimes points towards “true” north, as opposed to “magnetic” north.
The ocean has always been a mysterious place to humans, and when foul weather or poor navigation is involved, it can be a very deadly place. This is true all over the world. There is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur with any greater frequency in the Bermuda Triangle than in any other large, well-traveled area of the ocean.

HIROSHIMA BOMBING MORE FACTS
FACTS ABOUT BOMB
- Length: 3 metres
- Diameter: 0.7 metres
- Weight: 4 tons
- Element: Uranium 235
- Energy: Equivalent to 20 kilotons of TNT explosive power.
(It has been estimated that the yield was equivalent to approx. 13 kilotons.)
DEATH TOLL
About 140,000 +/- 10,000 (including 20,000 soldiers) were dead by the end of December 1945; 90% of these are thought to have been killed within 2 weeks after the bombing.
DESTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS
There were approx. 76,000 buildings in the city at the time, and 92% of these were destroyed by the blast and fire. The blast was so powerful that it did a great deal of damage to 60% of the buildings as far as 5 kilometers away from the hypocentre. It is said that only 6,180 buildings (8%) remained suitable for use in and around the city. An area of 13 square kilometers was transformed into a wide
stretch of A-bomb-affected ruins.
